23/08/2005 - Keeping it Free (or low cost) - Tools that changed the world... well maybe.

I am obsessed with trying out new software; I do it to see how the standards of software are changing and also because I'm looking out for new tools to use and make my day better.

Heres some tools that I just cant be without;

Space Monger - an ace tool for seeing which directories are using your disc space.

Wget - A command line tool for getting web pages / downloads anything that you want to download; I use this near enough everyday and have it built into some tools I've written; cool stuff.

Sync Back - Backups are truley the bain of my life; We have so much data and not enough hours in the night to back it up ! - More importantly I have data at home and in work that I want to sync to an off site server; This tool does network connections (with different username password combos) and you can backup files to an FTP server with it - and its free (although you can pay $20 if you want a registered version with more features)

What Application is holding a file open ? - Wholockme is a simple little application that will tell you which application is holding a file open. I hate Windows for this - you can'd delete or rename a file because its locked but Windows won't tell you who is holding the file open. This little app will though :)

App Rocket
For those of you who are used to Macs then you will know about Spotlight - a cool file searching tool. Well App Rocket is similar for Windows, it will index things like programs / documents and favorites and then you just hit alt and space then type the first few characters or a keyword to get a list of matches. I use this because I dont organise my favorites - its too much of a hassle so instead I just tag each shortcut with a keyword when I add it then I can just search my favorites in seconds. There is one problem with this in that if you point it a large dir then it'll become a memory hogg - so try to keep the files you want to index to a few key directories.

Agent Ransack
This is a just a quick way to search for files; Approcket above has to index files but agent is used to search to network drives etc and allows you to look for words in files as well. Very cool and free.
